National Webinar “Deep Learning: Are Teachers and Students Ready?” Encouraging the Transformation of Civic Education

Bandung, March 19, 2025 - The Pancasila and Citizenship Education (PPKn) Study Program of Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) together with MGMP PPKn SMA Bandung Regency successfully held a National Webinar entitled “Deep Learning: Are Teachers and Students Ready?” online through Zoom Meeting. This activity also collaborates with the Center for Public Policy Studies, Population, and Cultural Diversity LPPM UPI. The webinar was attended by more than 300 Civics teachers from various schools in Indonesia as well as students and academics who were enthusiastic about exploring the deep learning approach in civic education. This event aims to encourage the transformation of pedagogy from surface learning to deep learning centered on developing critical thinking, creativity, and curiosity of students.

Resource Persons and Remarks

The webinar was opened with remarks from:

  • 1. Prof. Dr. Dadang Suhendar, M.Hum. (Head of LPPM UPI)
  • 2. Dr. Sri Wahyuni Tanshzil, M.Pd. (Head of the Center for Public Policy, Population, and Cultural Diversity of LPPM UPI)
  • 3. Dr. Fujie Indra Susilowati, S.Pd. (Head of MGMP PPKn SMA Bandung Regency)

The event continued with a keynote speech from Dr. Syaifullah, S.Pd., M.Si., Chair of the UPI Civics Study Program, who emphasized the importance of integrating the deep learning approach in civic learning, especially in the context of 21st century education which requires students to become critical and responsible digital citizens.

This webinar was hosted by Sonson Soniaji, S.Pd. as moderator and Deden Abdurrahman, S.H., S.Pd. as master of ceremony. The activity ran interactively with a question and answersession which was responded enthusiastically by the participants. One of the participants, Anggi Cayanati, expressed her view that deep learning is able to foster students' curiosity and initiative in exploring learning topics in more depth, including through contextualized real projects at school. With this activity, UPI Civics Study Program strengthens its commitment in fostering strategic partnerships with teacher communities and education stakeholders to develop relevant and impactful learning practices. This webinar is also part of UPI's efforts to support the 4th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) on quality education. Webinar participants received official e-certificates from LPPM UPI, presentation materials, and collaborative networks for innovative Civics learning development.
