Sociology Education Students at UPI Propose Concrete Solutions through Showcase Project Citizens

Bandung, June 13, 2025 — Students from the Sociology Education and Civic Education Study Programs at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) showcased a range of real-world solutions to social issues during the Showcase Project Citizens held at the FPIPS Auditorium, UPI. This event was part of the final project for two courses: Sociology Learning Strategies for Sociology Education students and Civic Project for Civic Education students, both of which integrate project-based learning with civic engagement.

In this showcase, students presented issue-based projects that they identified from their surroundings. The presentations were divided into three major groups with relevant topics. Sociology Group 1 presented the theme "Rainbow Underground: The Invisible Gay Community in Bandung"; Sociology Group 2 addressed "The Phenomenon of Living Together or Cohabitation"; and the Civic Education group tackled "No Student Left Behind, Hope Matters: Civic Actions." Each group compiled a project portfolio consisting of problem identification, root cause analysis, alternative policy proposals, and context-based action plans.

“This activity encourages students to think critically, collaboratively, and constructively about contemporary civic issues. They are not just learning theories, but also experiencing the process of becoming active and socially aware citizens,” said Dr. Siti Komariah, M.Si., Ph.D., one of the lecturers for the Sociology Learning Strategies course.

Meanwhile, Sociology Education lecturer Muhammad Retsa Rizaldi Mujayapura, M.Pd., who also served as one of the judges, emphasized that Project Citizens provides a space for reflective pedagogy that connects sociology learning with students’ real social realities. “Students design learning scenarios that enable their future students to think as young citizens who can identify problems and propose value-based solutions,” he explained.

Through this activity, UPI reaffirms its commitment to preparing future educators who are not only academically competent but also possess strong social awareness and civic responsibility.
