Empowering Communication Studies: ASPIKOM Jabar’s Strategic Initiative for Quality Education and SDG Integration

YOGYAKARTA – In a significant move toward enhancing the standards of higher education in Indonesia, the Association of Higher Education in Communication Science (ASPIKOM) West Java Chapter successfully organized a three-day intensive benchmarking and professional development program. The event focused on three pivotal pillars: Internal Quality Assurance Systems (SPMI), Outcome-Based Education (OBE) curriculum implementation, and laboratory standardization.

The program, which ran from April 23 to 25, brought together 39 key stakeholders, including deans, department heads, and lecturers from various institutions. Representing the Communication Studies Study Programme, Dr. Wina Nurhayati Praja, M.Pd., participated as the faculty advisor for student affairs, highlighting the university’s commitment to academic excellence and institutional growth.

This initiative aligns closely with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education). By focusing on the Internal Quality Assurance System (SPMI) and the transition to an Outcome-Based Education (OBE) curriculum, ASPIKOM Jabar is ensuring that communication education in West Java meets international benchmarks, providing students with relevant skills for the modern workforce.

Furthermore, the spirit of the event embodies SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Through Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and institutional visits, the program fostered a collaborative environment where academic leaders shared best practices, strengthening the collective quality of communication studies across the region.

A Journey of Academic Benchmarking

The ASPIKOM Jabar delegation, featuring academic leaders from various institutions in West Java, united for the three-day quality enhancement program in Yogyakarta.

The itinerary began on April 23 with a visit to Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta (UAJY). Participants engaged in deep-dive discussions regarding the practical management of communication programs and the rigorous implementation of quality assurance protocols.

The second day, April 24, featured visits to two prestigious institutions: Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) and Universitas AMIKOM Yogyakarta. These sessions provided profound insights into curriculum innovation, the integration of advanced technology in communication learning, and the standardization of world-class communication laboratories. This benchmarking is essential for the Communication Studies Study Programme to adapt to the digital-first landscape of the 21st century.

The program concluded with a cultural gathering at Parangtritis Beach. While informal, this session was vital for strengthening the professional networks and personal bonds between communication academics in West Java.

Through this blend of technical academic discourse and networking, the event is expected to significantly deepen the expertise of educators. The implementation of OBE and refined quality assurance systems will serve as the foundation for the Communication Studies Study Programme to continue innovating and producing graduates who are competitive on a global scale.
