“Ngelana Bumi Jawi” 2024: Field Trip of Tourism Marketing Management 2022 Students to Malang and Yogyakarta

Tourism Marketing Management students from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (MPP UPI) class of 2022 successfully conducted the "Ngelana Bumi Jawi" Field Trip from November 19–23, 2024. This event was attended by 90 fifth-semester students, accompanied by four faculty supervisors, with the aim of exploring the beauty and tourism potential of Malang, Batu City, and Yogyakarta. Carrying the theme "Where Nature Meets Culture," the trip provided a hands-on learning experience that connected classroom theories with real-world applications. Through visits to various tourist destinations, students not only enjoyed the natural and cultural attractions but also conducted observations and analyses as part of their coursework in Tourism Marketing Research and Digital & Social Media Marketing for Tourism.

The journey began early in the morning from Bandung. After gathering at the UPI Museum, the group departed for Cirebon, stopping at Rest Area 207A Palikanci for lunch. The second checkpoint was at Rest Area 754A in Surabaya for dinner. The trip continued until midnight, reaching the Jeep Bromo basecamp at Lava Hill, Probolinggo. Despite the long and tiring journey, the participants remained enthusiastic as new adventures awaited.

At dawn, students set off for Penanjakan Peak to witness the breathtaking sunrise over Mount Bromo, a much-anticipated highlight of the trip. After enjoying the spectacular view, they continued their exploration to Teletubbies Hill and Whispering Sand. Satisfied with their adventure in Bromo, the group returned to the basecamp for lunch, freshened up, and prepared for their next destination: Batu City, where they stayed at Batu Paradise Hotel. In the evening, they held a Malam Keakraban (Makrab) or Social Night, featuring a communal dinner, unique costume performances, and games, creating a warm and memorable bonding experience.

The third day started with a visit to Jatim Park 1, an educational theme park combining entertainment with interactive learning. After a fun and insightful time at Jatim Park 1, the group proceeded to Museum Angkut, Indonesia’s largest transportation museum, showcasing an extensive collection of vehicles from different eras and countries. Before leaving Batu City, they stopped by a souvenir center to purchase local specialties. In the evening, the journey continued to Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta, for the next day’s cultural and nature-based exploration.

The morning in Yogyakarta began with exciting activities at Sadranan Beach, where students engaged in snorkeling. This activity was not only a recreational experience but also an opportunity to observe firsthand the development of marine tourism in the area. By midday, the group headed to Kukup Beach for lunch before proceeding to Obelix Sea View in the afternoon. This destination offered stunning sunset views and traditional art performances, giving students a direct experience of how cultural attractions are integrated into nature-based tourism. The day concluded with dinner at Rumah Makan Bantar Angin before the group returned to their accommodation for rest.

On the final day, students participated in a batik workshop at the Yogyakarta Batik Museum. During this session, they learned traditional batik-making techniques from local artisans and gained insight into how the batik industry contributes to the local economy and cultural identity. After the workshop, they visited a souvenir center to purchase local Yogyakarta products, with a short detour to the iconic Malioboro Street. Finally, they embarked on the long journey back to Bandung, marking the end of a trip filled with valuable experiences and learning opportunities.

The "Ngelana Bumi Jawi" Field Trip was more than just a travel experience—it was a chance for students to observe how tourism destinations are managed, how marketing strategies are implemented, and how nature and culture interact within the tourism industry. This activity provided valuable insights into destination management, tourist behavior, and the role of digital marketing in tourism promotion. Additionally, it helped students enhance their communication skills, teamwork, and travel management abilities—essential competencies for their future careers. With great enthusiasm, students hope that similar programs will continue in the future to further enrich their learning experiences in the tourism industry. See you on the next Field Trip!
