The Communication Studies Program is one of the flagship programs established to address the challenges of communication in the modern era. The proposal of this program began in 2010, based on the Strategic Plan of Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (Renstra UPI 2006-2010). Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Idrus Affandi, S.H., who served as the Dean of the Faculty of Education in Social Sciences (FPIPS) from 2008 to 2010, the program was designed to make a significant contribution to the development of communication science in Indonesia.

The proposal for the establishment of this program was crafted by a dedicated team led by Dr. H. Suwatno, M.Si., who was committed to creating a study program that is relevant and responsive to societal needs. The establishment of the Communication Studies Program was driven by the belief that this discipline can provide solutions to various challenges related to human interaction and social relationships faced by society, particularly in Indonesia. With a holistic approach, the program aims to develop knowledge through in-depth studies of the interconnections between social phenomena and development, thereby enhancing its relevance to the broader community.

The Communication Studies Program was officially established on May 20, 2011, through the Rector's Decree No. 3288/UN40/DT/2011. As a new (non-educational) program within the Faculty of Education in Social Sciences who was led by Prof. Dr. Karim Suryadi, M.Si.. Graduates of this program earn the title of Bachelor of Communication Science ("S.I.Kom."), with the expectation that they will significantly contribute to various sectors of communication in Indonesia.
